This is the house that Mies van der Rohe built in 1951. Photo of Farnsworth House, a glass house designed by Mies van der Rohe Back in October 2003 we told you about the landmark Farnsworth House being put on the auction block, an act that alarmed architecture scholars and enthusiasts alike. Would the new owner move the house away from its pastoral location in Plano, Illinois? Would it be remodeled? Torn down? Turned into an amusement park?

The auction made us pause and ask the question: What happens to an architect's work after it's built?

Mies van der Rohe was born in Aachen, Germany, on March 27, 1886. The infamous architect died August 17, 1969 in Chicago. When an architect dies, the fate of his creations is solely in the hands of others. Fortunately for all of us, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Landmarks Preservation Council of Illinois were able to outbid other buyers at the 2003 auction. For the past decade, the 20th-century glass house has been preserved as a museum and open to the public—a happy outcome that we celebrate on Mies van der Rohe's birthday.
