Clients. Where would architects be without them? Photo of a statue made from jelly beans, man with mustache, top hat, vest, red tie, formal attire Big name clients like Rowland Hussey Macy, James Cash Penney, Richard Warren Sears, and Marshall Field played an irreplaceable role in shaping big buildings of the 20th century.

Shown here is American-born Harry Gordon Selfridge, who put together his department store empire in Great Britain. In Masterpiece Theater: Mr. Selfridge, we get to see The Showman Behind the Retail Empire. Although the focus of the film is not on architecture, the story of Mr. Selfridge gives insight into business dealings that made his buildings possible. Watch for the dramatization on PBS in the U.S.

PS: The model of Selfridge that you see here is made from thousands of seasonably appropriate jelly beans. Enjoy!
